Ford SVT Raptor 2013

Ford SVT Raptor is one of the few gas guzzlers that makes a trip to the gas station exciting.

In a Toyota Prius, buying more gas allows you to travel more miles.

In the Ford SVT Raptor, buying more gas is like buying more fun.

Let’s be very clear. I do not own a flat-brimmed hat. I do not watch mixed martial arts. But I do love this Ford SVT Raptor.

Building it was the first genuinely brave thing an American automaker has done in years. I’d love to have been in the meetings that ended with this thing being green-lighted.

That Ford’s radical factory pre-runner actually sales has to be icing on the cake. Not because it isn’t awesome — it is — but because it’s hard to imagine whose lifestyle a truck that’s built to fly through the desert at 100 mph actually fits into.

I see them often though, usually in semi-urban environments. My time with our Ford SVT Raptor was mostly city driving in Detroit and Lansing, Michigan.

Two friends of mine, I’ll call them Joe and Calvin because, well, their names are Joe and Calvin, both owned Ford F-150s. Both worked in construction, one on homes and the other on commercial buildings. Both decided at about the same time they just couldn’t afford the gas anymore and didn’t really need the F-150s for work, and traded them in for passenger cars. Joe bought a Focus hatchback and Calvin a Volkswagen Passat. Today, both really wish they still had their F-150s. That’s the thing about pickup trucks and I don’t think nontruck people always see or get it: Once you have one, it’s tough to go back to a car.

On to the Ford SVT Raptor: It’s a big, meaty, imposing truck.

The 6.2-liter V8 is a gem. More than enough power and terrific hot rod sounds — Fits perfectly with this Ford SVT Raptor.

That’s it though. Overall, I love the Ford SVT Raptor And I can see why pickup truck buyers eventually return to the fold, or at least wish they could …

I love this F-150 Ford SVT Raptor. Up until this point, I haven’t experienced this Super machine. The previous times we’ve had a Ford SVT Raptor come through the fleet I’ve either been out of the office or just wasn’t lucky enough to have my name called to have it for the night.

It’s an imposing machine to drive down the road considering the extra size and specific exterior body treatments. The  track is 6.6 inches wider than the regular F-150, features a higher ride height sitting on the long-travel Fox Racing Shoxs and 35-inch BFGoodrich tires. Can you imagine seeing this Raptor charging up on you in the rear view mirror of your car with the dark brick wall grille with the integrated marker lamps? I certainly would get out of the way.

What was real surprising to me was how well the Ford SVT Raptor behaved on road. The fact that the tires are all-terrain instead of being full-fledge mudder rubber help, but the off-road-focused suspension does an admirable job keeping the body controlled when going around turns and bumps are easily damped out. Steering isn’t overly heavy or light to be just right to roll around town, and the brakes are stout.

The coolest part of my time with the Ford SVT Raptor was the day I spent taking it off-road and actually utilizing its capabilities.

The highlight of my off-road adventure had to be getting a little airborne with the Ford SVT Raptor as I drove out of a small pit. I think Bo and Luke Duke would be a little proud of me.

I really like the Ford SVT Raptor and look forward to driving this bad boy again on- or off-road. I think it’s safer to say that I’m a Ford SVT Raptor guy and to just leave it at that.
