Chevrolet SS sports sedan 2014

Chevrolet SS sports sedan 2014 is the latest iteration of the Pontiac G8.

The full-sized, rear-wheel driven sedan powered by a V8 engine, the Chevrolet SS packs in enough power to put it head-to-head with the Dodge Charger while giving a different experience than the Camaro.

Starting at nearly $44,500, the Chevrolet SS packs in a V8 engine, a fresh look, and enough quality to fight off the Charger.

For a defunct marque, Pontiac is having a legendarily long death rattle.

The 2014 Chevrolet SS sports sedan is not the first, but the third reincarnation of the Pontiac G8.

The Pontiac G8, developed by GM’s Australian subsidiary, Holden, wasn’t nearly so popular in life as it has become in death. At the beginning of our lingering financial crisis, the G8 had been introduced as the belated replacement of Pontiac’s former flagship sedan, the Bonneville, which was front wheel driven. The G8 was a throwback of sorts, being a full sized rear wheel driven sedan powered by a V8 engine.  At its introduction, only one other domestically produced rear wheel drive performance oriented sedan was remaining on the market, the mid-sized Dodge Charger.

However, born into an era of extreme economic uncertainty, the G8 languished on the lots of doomed Pontiac dealers and the car died with the “excitement division.” Unlike Pontiac itself, the G8 essence was tapped by GM to live on.

It became the basis of the Chevrolet Caprice Police Patrol Vehicle. Next, it had its chassis shortened to become the foundation of the latest Camaro. Now the G8 lives on beneath the Chevrolet SS.

Coming in at nearly $44,500, the Chevrolet SS is inevitably a niche product in the line up. That said, it is easy to discern who comprises the target market for a sedan with a V8 making 415 BHP and 415 ft.-lbs. of torque: Men who can’t make the spousal case for owning a Camaro because of its impracticality as a family car, but who want comparable performance all the same.

But what about the Charger? There are V8 Hemi versions of the Charger that undercut the Chevrolet SS by nearly $10,000. The SRT8 version comes with a 6.4L V8 making 470 BHP and has a higher sticker price than the SS, even after you tack on the limited options Chevrolet will serve up. It would seem the Charger has the Chevrolet SS bracketed pretty well. There’s no escaping that many domestic buyers are put off by Chrysler’s eternal struggle with build quality. Make no mistake, you can get a flawless Chrysler produced product, you just have no idea whether you did until you’ve owned the vehicle out of warranty. Additionally, there is no escaping that the current Charger wears sheet metal that is but the latest variation on a theme begun in 2005, an eternity for design cues. Lastly, a significant fraction of the patrol cruisers one sees these days are based upon the Charger, a fact that does not lend the Chevrolet SS any lead foot cachet. What the Chevrolet SS brings to the showroom fight is better initial build quality, a version of the V8 made famous in both the Corvette and Camaro, along with a fresher, and less of a boy racer look, inside and out, than the top Dodge Charger variants manage.
